Urban Identity of Saharan Ksour in Algeria

Abstract

The Saharan ksour of Algeria represent a unique form of vernacular architecture that embodies the cultural, social, and environmental identity of desert communities. However, these heritage settlements are experiencing significant deterioration due to urban transformation and abandonment. This study examines the urban identity of Algeria’s Saharan ksour and analyzes their architectural and cultural characteristics, along with the challenges associated with their preservation. It adopts a qualitative approach based on a review of academic publications, historical studies, and institutional reports on desert urbanism and architectural heritage in Algeria. The findings reveal that the ksour reflect a strong relationship among environmental adaptation, social organization, and architectural form. However, they are threatened by modernization, population displacement, and inadequate preservation policies. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of Saharan urban identity and highlights the need to strengthen the legal and cultural frameworks supporting the protection and sustainable rehabilitation of the ksour.
